Implementing a MAX31855 Thermocouple Interface on RP2040 with Embedded Rust

This post presents a complete implementation of a thermocouple-based temperature measurement system using the Raspberry Pi Pico (RP2040) microcontroller and the MAX31855 thermocouple-to-digital converter. The system is implemented in Rust using the embedded-hal hardware abstraction layer, enabling platform-agnostic driver development. I demonstrate cold-junction compensation, fault detection, and introduce a novel remote firmware update mechanism via USB serial commands. Experimental results show stable temperature readings with 0.25°C resolution, matching the theoretical specifications of the MAX31855. The complete implementation, including a reusable driver library, is available as open-source software.

I. Introduction

Temperature measurement is fundamental to countless embedded systems applications, from industrial process control to environmental monitoring. K-type thermocouples remain the industry standard for wide-range temperature sensing due to their broad measurement range (-200°C to +1350°C), durability, and low cost [1]. However, interfacing thermocouples with microcontrollers presents several challenges:

Signal conditioning: Thermocouple voltages are in the microvolt range (approximately 41 µV/°C for K-type)
Cold-junction compensation: The reference junction temperature must be measured and compensated
Linearization: The thermocouple voltage-temperature relationship is non-linear

The MAX31855 integrated circuit addresses these challenges by providing amplification, cold-junction compensation, and digital output via SPI [2]. This post demonstrates how to interface this device with the RP2040 microcontroller using Rust's embedded ecosystem.

II. Background and Related Work

A. Thermocouple Theory

A thermocouple operates on the Seebeck effect, where a temperature gradient across a conductor produces an electromotive force (EMF). For a K-type thermocouple (Chromel-Alumel), the Seebeck coefficient $\alpha$ is approximately:

The measured voltage $V_{measured}$ is given by:

V_{measured} = \int_{T_{cold}}^{T_{hot}} \alpha(T) \, dT

For practical applications, this is approximated as:

V_{measured} \approx \alpha_K \cdot (T_{hot} - T_{cold})

where $T_{hot}$ is the measurement junction temperature and $T_{cold}$ is the reference (cold) junction temperature [3].

B. Cold-Junction Compensation

Since we measure the voltage relative to a reference junction at temperature $T_{cold}$ , we must compensate for this offset. The MAX31855 integrates a precision temperature sensor at the reference junction and performs this compensation internally using the equation:

T_{thermocouple} = T_{measured} + T_{cold-junction}

The internal temperature sensor provides 0.0625°C resolution, contributing to the overall system accuracy [2].

C. The embedded-hal Ecosystem

The Rust embedded ecosystem centers on the embedded-hal crate, which defines hardware abstraction traits for common peripherals [4]. This enables driver development that is decoupled from specific hardware:

III. System Architecture

A. Hardware Configuration

The system comprises three primary components:

Raspberry Pi Pico: ARM Cortex-M0+ dual-core processor at 133 MHz
MAX31855: Thermocouple-to-digital converter with SPI interface
K-type Thermocouple: Temperature sensing element

IV. Implementation

A. MAX31855 Driver Design

The MAX31855 communicates via a read-only SPI interface, transmitting 32 bits of data when CS is asserted low. The data format is:

The temperature values use two's complement representation. For the 14-bit thermocouple reading:

B. embedded-hal SpiDevice Implementation

The embedded-hal 1.0 specification separates SpiBus (shared bus) from SpiDevice (bus + chip select) [4]. We implement a lightweight wrapper:

This pattern enables the MAX31855 driver to work with any SPI implementation.

C. Remote Firmware Update Mechanism

A key innovation in this implementation is the remote bootloader trigger. The RP2040's ROM contains a function reset_to_usb_boot() that reboots the device into USB mass storage mode [5]. We expose this via a serial command:

D. Fault Detection

The MAX31855 provides comprehensive fault detection. Our driver exposes these as a Rust enum:

The fault detection logic examines the lower 3 bits of the 32-bit response:

V. Experimental Results

A. Temperature Accuracy

We evaluated the system against a calibrated reference thermometer. The MAX31855's internal ADC provides:

Thermocouple resolution: $\pm 0.25°C$
Cold-junction resolution: $\pm 0.0625°C$
Thermocouple accuracy: $\pm 2°C$ (typical, 0°C to 700°C range)

B. Measurement Stability

Over a 30-minute test period at ambient temperature (~21°C), we observed:

The observed variation is within the expected range given the 0.25°C quantization and thermal fluctuations.

C. SPI Timing

The implementation uses a 1 MHz SPI clock, well within the MAX31855's 5 MHz maximum:

With the 2-second measurement interval, SPI bus utilization is negligible:

VI. Building and Deployment

A. Build Environment

The project requires the Rust embedded toolchain:

For the first deployment, physical access is required:

Hold BOOTSEL button while connecting USB
Copy firmware.uf2 to the RPI-RP2 drive
Device automatically reboots

C. Remote Updates

Subsequent updates can be performed remotely:

VII. Conclusion

This post presented a complete implementation of thermocouple temperature sensing on the RP2040 microcontroller using Rust. The key achievements include:

Platform-agnostic driver: The MAX31855 driver uses embedded-hal traits, enabling reuse across different microcontroller platforms
Remote update capability: The BOOTSEL command enables firmware updates without physical access
Comprehensive fault detection: Open circuit and short-circuit conditions are detected and reported
Production-ready code: The implementation includes proper error handling and is suitable for industrial applications

Future work will integrate this temperature sensing capability with frequency measurement and relay control for a complete multi-sensor data acquisition system.
